Madikeri - captured by Nikhil

It was January 2020 and my friends and I packed our bags for a long weekend in Madikeri. We didn’t know much about the place, and we didn’t speak Kannada or Coorgi - but The Wayfarer made sure we had a fantastic 3 days!

On a Friday morning, we met our personal driver/guide Ramesh at Mangalore airport and drove straight to Madikeri. Our stay was in the middle of a 150-year-old coffee estate, in a classic British bungalow. We strolled around, paddled a boat in the river that flows through the estate - it was the stuff of dreams.

On Saturday at 8 am we awoke to a pleasant 12 degrees Celsius - not the most usual thing for southern India! The fresh filter coffee and traditional Coorgi breakfast warmed us up immediately, and we set off in a jeep to explore the district. We saw Abbey Kote falls, a couple of viewpoints offering spectacular sights of the Nilgiris, and of course Namdroling monastery - a calming experience you can’t miss. Do try to reach at prayer time - it heals your soul.

It hurt to say goodbye to Madikeri on Sunday afternoon. Many thanks to Ramesh for being so friendly and knowledgeable about the area and for driving with such skill. We’d like to thank The Wayfarer too for organizing this trip at just Rs 10,000 per person inclusive of flights!
