Bhutan - captured by Kaustubh |
After the second
wave ended and all was clear, my family was itching to get out of the city and
head for the mountains. And what better destination than Bhutan, the
Switzerland of South Asia? We packed our thermals and booked our flights:
Mumbai -> Kolkata -> Paro
Bhutan is quite something else. Over 70% of
the country is forest land, and the people are not your typical materialists,
so it’s a pristine preserve of how life should truly be. We had a magical 7
days in the cities and villages of this heaven-on-earth: 2 days in Paro, 2 in
Thimphu, 2 in Punakha and one in Gangtey - a remote town that takes over 5
hours to drive to via an old rural road.
The highlights of our tour were surely the
monasteries in each town, the animal reserve with Bhutan’s favourite animal
(Takin) and of course the national library, which holds the Guinness World
Records certified World’s Largest Book. The nation’s beautiful cold climate was
the cherry on top of our week-long escape.
Note: We’d like to thank The Wayfarer for
making all the arrangements for our journey! They got us the best hotels and a
superb guide & driver, all at a reasonable price of INR 30,000 per person.
